Syncing with "My Contacts" and Lists
« on: March 14, 2010, 02:15:10 AM »
Hi,

it would be great if it would be possible to sync an address book with the "My Contacts" group but at the same time sync other lists with custom groups. I would like this because for example the OSX address book only syncs with "My Contacts", yet there is no easy way to add contacts to a list from the Thunderbird user interface (not even with extensions, as far as I can see). I'm using "StarMoveContact" to easily add contacts to a custom address book.

Do you have any plans on implementing this?

Thanks,

Tobias

Hello,

I apologize for not replying to this sooner, in the future if I don't reply to a post for a while feel free to send me a PM or e-mail.

I'm working on version 0.3 which allows you to customize exactly what each address book synchronizes.  You can synchronize one address book with your "My Contacts" group on one Gmail account and another address book with all contacts and groups from that same account or a different account.

The easiest way to move contacts into a mailing list is to drag and drop them from the Address Book window, but it is very buggy so backup your contacts first (Tools -> Export).

The safest way to drag contacts into a mailing list is to first drag them into the address book containing that list.  Hold down Ctrl to make sure the contacts are copied.
Once the contacts are in the address book, select the AB and drag contacts into the list.  They might show up twice on the right half of the Address Book window.  If they do, select a different address book then select that one again.  If they are still there twice restart Thunderbird and if they still appear twice then they were duplicated (partially) so delete the one with the least amount of properties.

Here's is a preview of what 0.3's Accounts manager looks like:

EDIT: You can read more about version 0.3 here.  I hope to have a beta (somewhat stable testing version) release within the next few weeks.

Hi,

I already found out about this version and am using the beta right now. It works as you describe (one address book syncs with all contacts, one with "My contacts". This seems to work great.

Thanks,

Tobias
