My Contacts
« on: April 05, 2009, 03:13:52 PM »
Hi

Is it possible for it to only sync the my contacts subset of addresses as i don't really want all the collected addresses in thunderbird?

Thanks

Christian

Hi,

There is not an option to do that yet, but I am planning on adding it for 0.2.0, and hopefully 0.2.0rc1 in a few weeks.  I'll try to keep you updated here and provide technical details in the bug report here.  For now the contacts in the My Contacts group are available in the directory under the My Contacts mailing list.

I am going to start working on this now and it will probably be possible in the next version (0.2.0b3 or 0.2.0rc1).

If anyone is interested in more details, I filed Bug 20865 to track my progress.

I've been able to add this feature, so it will be possible in the next version. :)  If anyone feels really brave, it is in the CVS repository.

I have a question for you and anyone else who may use this feature.  If a contact is deleted in Thunderbird when only one group is synchronized should that contact be removed completely or only from that group?  I am personally starting to lean towards removing it only from that group.

what the best function for this would be is to have the my contacts sync directly with the root of the address book as such if you delete a contact it should delete completely from google.

This also should prevent you from having to add a contact in thunderbird and then have to add it to the my contacts group to have it sync as this is quite convoluted.

Thanks

I released 0.2.0b3 with support for just synchronizing My Contacts.  If you are going to switch to just synchronizing My Contacts, please read the instructions on my blog.

Deleting a contact in Thunderbird will delete it completely from Google.

So far so good, I deleted all of the contacts and got thunderbird to re-upload them as i prefer to keep the address fields.

I Have now deleted, added and modified in both directions and all appears to be ok.

Will keep an eye on it.

Many thanks

Christian,

Excellent, thanks for testing it.

If you want to keep the address fields on Google you can try synchronizing the existing home and work address fields using the Advanced preferences tab.  You can only pick 10 fields, but you could skip the Country field for each.  They aren't visible on Google, but it might help if you sync across multiple Thunderbird clients.  See the attached screenshot for a sample of how to sync most of the address fields.

In 0.3 I'm planning on automatically synchronizing all of these fields (still hidden from Google).

I may give that a try, however at the moment I only sync one thunderbird so it is not an issue, my laptops thunderbird is a copy of the desktop for use only when away, however it would be handy to be able to add contacts to that..

thanks
